Northern Energy’s new headquarters in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, was designed with a clear ambition: to create more than just a place to work. Developed by Studio 93 Ltd, the project set out to establish a workplace that feels welcoming, grounded and connected to both its people and its surroundings.
The brief focused on three key principles — warmth and comfort, flexibility for different styles of working, and a strong connection to the North. Rather than relying on a conventional open-plan office model, the design team sought to create an environment that balances collaboration with calm, and functionality with a more residential sense of ease.
The resulting workplace is organised around a clear spatial structure. The ground floor acts as a social hub designed for informal interaction, coffee breaks and team gatherings, while the upper floor provides open-plan workspaces supported by quieter zones for focus and restoration. Circulation between spaces was designed to feel natural, allowing smooth transitions between active and quieter environments.
Materiality plays a central role throughout the project. Soft woods, earthy tones, tactile fabrics and subtle brand references were used to create depth and familiarity, while expansive countryside views and natural daylight contribute to a calm and restorative atmosphere. Residential-style lounge settings further reinforce the intention to create a workplace that feels comfortable and intuitive to use day to day.
The project also explores workplace adaptability through a series of flexible and multi-functional spaces. A dual-purpose social area can shift between collaborative daytime use and evening events, while acoustic pods, panels and integrated lighting contribute both functionally and visually to the overall environment.
Sustainability and longevity were considered through both material choices and the long-term usability of the workplace. Studio 93 Ltd worked with local makers and incorporated recycled materials where possible, while the layout prioritises flexibility, inclusivity and wellbeing. Quiet areas, varied seating options, accessible routes and welcoming breakout spaces were integrated throughout the design to support different user needs and working styles.
The project ultimately reflects a workplace designed around people and everyday experience — one that prioritises comfort, belonging and connection alongside performance and practicality.
